A few months ago, I submitted a short story to Meerkat Press for an upcoming superhero anthology. Needless to say, I didn’t make the cut. There were over 700 submissions, so the likelihood of me being accepted, on my first try, was pretty astronomical. Unfortunately, this also caused me to become depressed. I felt like I failed as a writer. Then I had to remind myself that, this was my first ever submission. The story I wrote was rushed and not completely planned out.
Then work set in, and I found myself working 50+ hours a week. Then sickness. Then a general sense of “Blech”. I hadn’t looked at my story since I submitted it back in September. I didn’t want to look at my failure again. Finally, I had enough. I want to be a writer. I can’t let the denial of one publisher get me down. So I went out, bought a new Chromebook with my Christmas money dedicated to just writing, found a spot at my local library and started writing again. (I am currently at said Library. It’s nice to not be distracted.) My first mission, polishing my first short story, Codename: Amp.
It’s been a while since I opened up this file. As I reread it, I found certain things that needed more details. Reasons why, I think, might have kept me from being picked. Certainly, there were probably more reasons, but these were reasons I found unacceptable. Perhaps if I had started earlier and had more time to polish the story, it would have faired better. Regardless, I have finished the story and I will now release it freely.
A couple of notes before reading, though. I intentionally left out some details, namely main character, Alex. The entire story is written in a first person narrative, so I wanted to let the readers put themselves into the story, so I never give the main character a true gender. The location of the story is also vague, again to allow the reader to fill in the gaps with their own imagination. It might not have been a smart move on my part, but I feel that if I can let the reader be a part of the story, then they’ll take more from it.
But, let’s not waste any more time. This is hard for me because I don’t want to get burned again, but life is not without risk. You can download/view the PDF of my story down below. So, without further adieu, here is “Codename: Amp”.
